BOXER Bradley Evans stands on the brink of history.

The 18-year old from Royston faces Lee Gillespie at Bethnal Green's York Hall tomorrow (Friday) night, hoping to capture the 57 kg senior ABA title.

If he does so, he will become the first Royston boxer and Stevenage Boxing Club member to pick up the crown since the club was formed 60 years ago.

Evans said: "I've been training hard so I'm in good shape. I'm really looking forward to it and I'm confident of getting the result."

The bout is one of the biggest of Evans' fledging career so far, but he has proved time and time again that he is adept at coping under pressure, marching into the senior ABA finals at the first time of asking.

He has also represented England and Great Britain in what has been a remarkable year for the youngster.

The tall, imposing, Gillespie is a formidable adversary, and Evans will not be underestimating the challenge he poses.

"I've seen him in action before and he's a tidy boxer, he'll make it tough for me," he said of his opponent, who represents the Salford-based Bridgewater club.

Tickets for the bout are already sold out, with boxing fans eager to get a glimpse of some of the countries most promising amateur boxers.

Former ABA title holders include eventual world champions Frank Bruno, Nigel Benn, and Ricky Hatton.

Evans is relishing the prospect of sampling the York Hall atmosphere.

"I've boxed there once before and it was a great experience. The crowd can really get behind you and the atmosphere is amazing," he said.
