Cambridge IV 29pts Royston Vets 12pts IT SEEMS that playing with a stiff wind and the cold does not bring the best out of the Royston Vets rugby team. Although assisted by a few Colts, the visiting team did not get going. Royston were helped in the first half by the wind with long kicks from defence by Mark Lisher. Many of the tries came from mistakes rather than good moves and the first was no exception. Royston with an overlap allowed Cambridge to intercept and a player ran up the pitch unopposed to score under the posts. The second try by Cambridge was a catalogue of missed tackles as a player weaved his way through to score. Royston's first tackles were good but Cambridge had the strength to off-load and they were away. Royston's try was well worked. Colin Dacey at scrum-half took the ball early from a lineout and ran at the gap that had opened in the Cambridge defence. Quick ball to Neil Smith then set up the perfect pass for Mark Palmer to use his pace to score in the corner. Dacey capped a good all-round game with a long-range conversion. Turning around at half-time and playing into the wind meant it was always going to be difficult for Royston. Cambridge scored two further tries and in then the last five minutes due to their injured hooker the scrummages went unopposed. Cambridge scored first and then Royston scored. Colin Dacey's restart was not collected by Cambridge and Neil Smith grabbed the bouncing ball and fed Steve Crook, who crashed over, but overall it was a game to forget for Royston. Royston: D Howell, T Dummett, T Boyce, J Cottrell, B Bergen, T Richardson, P Rabbetts, S Luckman, C Dacey, N Smith, P Boulter, D Ritsema, S Crook, M Palmer, M Lisher.
