CUP holders Biggleswade United crashed out of this year's competition as an inspired Elsenham team took revenge for their heartbreaking semi-final defeat of two years ago.

Just as it was in 2008, Elsenham went into the game as Division Two leaders however with their opponents now riding high in Division One Biggleswade started as strong favourites.

It didn't look that way in the early stages as the visitors took the game by the scruff of the neck, forcing the home side onto the back foot with some incisive passing play.

With less than five minutes played the Biggleswade 'keeper was forced into action to keep out Mitchell Seaman's header from a Dean Clayden cross but he was powerless to do anything shortly afterwards as Mason Duckett drilled the ball low into the net to give Elsenham a deserved lead.

Rather than sit on their advantage, the away team pushed on in search of more goals and after another fine move Clayden found himself with shooting room and struck a firm left-footed drive into the far corner from 12 yards.

Biggleswade were clearly rattled and struggled to trouble an Elsenham back line superbly marshalled by skipper Michael Jarvis, with able assistance from Ed Beanland, Ross Cooper and Jack Gumble.

Unfortunately, Seaman's recent injury curse struck again after 30 minutes forcing him from the field of play but Josh Daniel immediately stepped into his position and provided a great foil for Clayden up front.

With minutes remaining in the half, Clayden's persistence saw him rob the Biggleswade defender in front of goal and although it appeared he was brought down in the box the referee was too far away from the play to give the spot kick.

Elsenham knew the home team would come on strongly in the second half and dug in for the battle.

Tony Hogg and Luke Fisher were competing for every ball in the centre of the field and although Biggleswade kept the visitors pinned back for long periods, it was still Elsenham that looked by far the more dangerous on the break.

Clayden fired just wide and Daniel failed to put away a glorious opportunity, while at the other end 'keeper Jon Booth had to make a fine save near the end to tip a goal-bound shot past the far post.

Biggleswade pressed furiously for a breakthrough and Adam Mace had to be alert to clear the ball off the line from one of many corners but this was to be Elsenham's day and fully deserved to be.
