JOHN Ellis has won the coveted Medal Winner's Trophy at Royston Golf Club after beating Ben Bennett in an 18-hole play-off.
The pair had tied with nett 68s a few weeks ago and this one was equally as close until the 14th hole when a string of wayward shots from Bennett gave Ellis a comfortable lead heading down the stretch.
Ellis held his nerve to take the trophy along with the Gold Spoon after having already won the event previously.
On Saturday the Club held its biggest match of the year when the captain took on the professionals. Sixty four players took part in a fourball, betterball, stableford event with all scores to count.
The professional’s team, led by Sean Clark, raced into a quick lead as five of the first six pairings for his side scored 41 points or better. Captain, Sid Seward was distraught as Clark and his partner Stuart Phillips started birdie, eagle, birdie but his side were the helped by a 10-point swing in one match.
However, it wasn’t enough as the pro’s team finished a comfortable 26 points ahead to retain the Pink Pig Trophy.
Adam Wright won the Junior Medal Winners final which was played in atrocious conditions last week. Wright returned a fantastic nett 72 in the rain and wind as most of the players fell away with high scores and non-returns.
Meanwhile, Luke Bailey has now taken over as junior captain and his first match of the year was against the seniors. New senior Captain, Phil Vince, knew he had his work cut out, as the young junior side swept into a quick lead and finished resounding winners 4 ½ - ½.
Junior team: Bailey, Middlemass, Pemberton, Porter, Smith, Sharp, Clark, Smith, Barrett and Sanders.
