ROYSTON got off to a dream start in Sunday's League Cup fixture at Letchworth, despite missing several players including their top scorer.

Within a minute the ball fell to striker Dominic Oxenford, who surged forward and wrong-footed the keeper before slotting the ball home.

Two minutes later the lead was doubled. A corner found Oxenford who headed the ball back across the area to Craig Lucken, who in turn headed powerfully into the top right hand corner.

At this stage a landslide seemed on the cards, but Rangers' defended in depth, and coupled with good use of the offside trap, they made life difficult for Colts and the visitors struggled to translate their superiority into further goals.

In fact it was Rangers who almost scored next, only a goal-line clearance by Jack Tidey maintaining Royston's two-goal cushion.

Colts continued to press as halftime approached, with Roger Skeggs and Oxenford creating good chances and some excellent work down the left by Ryan Ingrey; but the score remained unchanged the break.

The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half, the ball finding Adam Jinkerson who made no mistake from 10 yards out.

Rangers continued to battle gamely and came close to pulling one back moments later, but Colts keeper Tom Monti proved equal to the challenge with a superb take at full stretch.

Royston wrapped up the tie with 10 minutes remaining. A throw-in fell to Ricky Williams, who charged right through the hapless Rangers defence before blasting the ball past the keeper.

MANY things combined to produce an outstanding Colts performance in a 5-1 demolition of a high flying Bishop's Stortford.

Of these the most notable was the granite defence led by man-of-the-match Louis Townsend and speedster Martyn Green, with Jack Anderson and Lewis Hunter also in superb form there was no way through for Stortford.

Indeed the first goal of the match came from a hopeful lob towards the Colts goal that slipped through the keeper's hands into the path of the Stortford striker, who tapped in to put Colts one behind.

In the midfield Adam Sartini and Matt Brennan won the lion's share of possession and distributed well to give Colts the upper hand.

The equaliser came from a free kick that bobbed around in front of the Stortford goal before Louis Townsend hammered it low and fast past a stranded keeper.

Jacob Leighton then produced a fine run through the middle of the park and delivered a sweet pass to put Ellis King through.

His first shot was well blocked, though the ball fell kindly, and he made no mistake with the second to put Town in the lead.

Stortford countered well only to find Martyn Green too fast to beat, and from the resulting corner Connor Long saved well to keep Town in the lead.

That lead was stretched moments later when Adam Sartini was first to a clearance ball. He floated in a superb ball which Lewis Hunter met at pace and fired into the back of the net.

After the break Town were straight back into the action with Jake Booth going close within the first minute.

This time Matt Brennan was first to the clearance kick, his ball in found Ellis King who headed well towards goal, Jacob Leighton raced and just beat the Stortford keeper for the ball and headed in to put Colts 4-1 clear.

Will Heslam went close and Victor Falleta delivered several good passes prior to the final goal of the game.

Louis Townsend headed strongly towards goal only to have it cleared off the line, it fell to Keiran Willis-Wright whose cracking volley found it's target net to wrap up a fine all round performance and extend Colts' winning run to four matches.

COLTS recovered from an early first half setback to secure three vital away points in their quest to secure a top four league finish.

The visitors began sluggishly, Hitchin taking the lead early on with a speculative long-range effort from the left.

This proved the wake-up call Colts needed, Jordan Hall, collecting the ball with his back to goal, turning and then beating the advancing keeper with a delightful chip to put Colts level.

Both teams then battled for supremacy, Jake Benstead and the hard-working Jack Bailey going closest for Colts, Matt Cooney and Harry Stafford keeping play tight at the back.

Just as it seemed the half would end all square, Benstead broke through with a surging run from midfield and coolly slotted home for his sixth of the year.

Bailey then made it three, beating the keeper with a superb long-range shot for his 13th of the campaign.

Colts continued to exert their dominance at the start of the second half, moving the ball about well and creating a number of chances for substitutes John Middlemass and Lucas Sekobawane.

Hitchin then pulled one back from a poor clearance to set-up a tense final quarter.

Harry Bracewell saved bravely to prevent an equaliser for the home side before Sekobawane secured the victory for Colts, latching on to a great pass from Benstead and rounding the keeper for his 12th of the year.
