ROYSTON'S impressive run in the McMullen Cup came to an end with the tightest of semi final defeats against Rosedale BC.

In the match at St Albans-based Townsend BC, Royston pulled away early on all three rinks, but a strong Rosedale team fought back.

On rink two Brian Pepper, Terry Hollands, Derek Goodwin and Mick O'Flanagan struggled to contain their opponents, and eventually went down 20-10.

However, on rink one, Simon Lee, Keith Dockree, Don Sheriff and Stewart Brown led from the off, and with a superb display of intelligent bowling ran out 24-19 winners.

And in a close game on rink three, Matt Coppen, Mel Flack, Laurie Ramsay and Peter Adams almost snatched a late victory in an entertaining match.

And despite a 22-18 victory, Rosedale had enough points overall to finish the tie 57-56 winners.

Royston also dropped points in the Meldreth and District League, with a 71-55 defeat to Duxford.

However, the club's flagging confidence was boosted with a win in the MDL a few days later when Royston beat Sawston 70-51.

The Vets also chalked up a win with a 98-46 victory over Shephalbury, with captain Jim While inspiring his team with his leadership.

- WITH one game left of the C&D League Bassingbourn went down to Haddenham this week.

On rink two, despite leading 6-3 Maureen Hammond, Joe Cipullo and Dave Lester dropped eight shots to lose by 9-17, while on rink three Don Slater, Don Laing and Bill Manley also went down after a hard fought match to lose 13-11.

However, it was left to Anne Brown, Sid Manning and Ken Clark to make the highlight of the night for Bassingbourn.

On rink four, despite trailing 13-10, skip Clark inspired his team with a superb conversion to pick up five shots to hold on to a point.

On rink five Brian Hunt, Andy Brown, and Graham Parrish had a tight game and dropped four shots on end 12 to make Haddenham winners by two shots.

n MELDRETH Bowls Club played host to the Cambridgeshire Ladies Finals, with club member Barbara Clutterbuck winning the Two-Wood Singles title.
