GRENEWAY School's impressive Wix Trophy run has come to an end - with defeat to a strong Radlett Preparatory School in the final.

Playing some attractive skilful football on their way to the final, Greneway under 11s had already beaten Longmeadow of Stevenage, William Ransom of Hitchin, and Sandon and Colney Heath of Potters Bar.

It was the first time that the school had reached the final of the competition, which was held at St Albans City Football Club.

Greneway got to a shaky start, and were a goal down after just 90 seconds.

Radlett quickly added a second goal only moments later.

But as the half wore on, Greneway began to make a few chances, with Luke Bailey and Fergus Campbell creating a good chance for Anthony Lane.

In the second half Greneway had to gamble.

And to their credit, the team responded well with Campbell, Robert Brumby, and Joe Reddan going close.

But with Greneway on the offensive, all Radlett had to do was take advantage of the space. And they did just that, making good use of their opponents' stretched defence to make the score 3-0.

The lively Bailey tried hard to salvage a Greneway goal, with Reddan being denied a chance of his own only by a last-ditch block by a defender.

However, Radlett snatched another on the break to make it 4-0 just before the final whistle.

Greneway coach Terry Graves said: "Greneway have learned a valuable lesson that you have to be switched on and playing fully from the first whistle, especially against a good side.

"Nevertheless it has been a very successful campaign and one which has benefited all the players in their quest to enjoy playing at a very high level.
