ROYSTON Bowling Club completed a double triumph as they won the McMullen Trophy and the Meldreth & District League trophy on the same day.

Royston faced the Owls team from Watford in the semi-final of the McMullen Trophy at the Roebuck. in Stevenage.

After more than two-and-a-half hours of competitive bowling, the Royston team of Simon Lee at lead, Keith Dockree at two, Don Sheriff at three, and Stewart Brown at skip recorded a draw of 18 shots each.

The rink of Matt Coppen, lead, Mel Flack, two, Laurie Ramsay at three, and Peter Adams at skip lost by two shots, 20-18.

The third Royston rink, with Brian Pepper, lead, Roger Davies, two, Derek Goodwin at three, and Mick O'Flanagan at skip, had an easy 28-10.

This gave Royston a win by some 16 shots and put them into the final against the Rosedale BC (Cheshunt) in the afternoon.

The morale of the Royston team was high, and continued throughout the game, encouraging each other when a good bowl was delivered.

As the game neared the final ends, it became clear that the Royston team were about to go into the club history book as winners of the McMullen Trophy. In the end, Royston were comfortably ahead on shots that the last end on two rinks was not played.

Royston had won on two rinks and lost on one by only three shots. A brilliant team effort, which resulted in a just reward.

On the same day as the McMullen Trophy was being played, Royston had another team in action at Meldreth. This match was the final of the Meldreth & District League, and Royston were up against Steeple Morden who had won this league three times in the past.

This was only Royston's third attempt at winning this competition, and as expected a close game ensued.

At the end of the match, Royston's Ron Colton, Shirley Pawson, and skip Alan Potter, won 21-11.

Rink four saw Joan Knights, Peter Fisk, and skip Mic Smith, lose 23-11, while on rink five, Jo Bannerman, Eunice Dockree, and skip Andy Keating, narrowly lost at 22-17.

The key score came on rink two where Jim While, Linda O'Flanagan, and skip Tony Williams romped home with a 26-10 win to give Royston a 75-66 victory and the Meldreth & District League

Matt Coppen became the L & D Champion of Champions by beating M. Parsons of the Dixonians B.C. (Stevenage) 21-3.

The L&D Singles Championship was won by Peter Adams, who beat fellow Royston bowler Mick O'Flanagan 21-8.

The Royston Fours team of Matt Coppen, Neil Butler, Don Sheriff, and skip Stewart Brown, had an easy win over their opponents, skipped by N Houghton of Holwell BC coasting home with a 35-16 score.

Royston's pairs, Mel Flack and Don Sheriff, lost out to a strong team from Baldock, 10-28.

Royston's last inter club competition, the Club League (Two Fours) Ginder Trophy, was held at Garston BC.

The semi-finals were held in the morning in which Royston were up against Sawbridgeworth. Royston won this game 28-13 and 21-18 to put them into the final.

Oakhill were Royston's opponents in the final, and this was to be a very close game indeed.

The final result was hinged on the last bowl of the game, but it was not to be, Royston losing by one-shot, 40-39.

A disappointing end to the season, as it would have been ideal to finish in a blaze of glory.

As the outdoor bowling season comes to a close, Royston played two friendly matches.

On Saturday September 16 Royston visited the North Mymms club for a four rinks (4's) of men and two triples of ladies.

Royston lost the game with the men losing by 10 shots and the ladies by two shots, allow Mymms a 91-79 victory.

The following day Royston played away at the Eternit BC with four-mixed triples. On this occasion, Royston managed a win by just two shots, 68-66.

The weekend was also the Royston Bowls Club Finals Day. Even with the two above competitions taking place, most of the finals were completed on the Saturday and Sunday.
