Melbourn travelled to Cambridge with six first team regulars missing.
Despite a reshuffled pack, they took the lead after 18 minutes, when new signing Steevens Wagner poked home the opener, following some good work by Jason Gray and Gary Norman.
However, the lead was short-lived as Cambridge drew level with a well taken equaliser.
The home side effectively killed the game with 10 minutes of the first half remaining, scoring two quick goals.
In the second half, Melbourn's weaknesses were further exposed with another three goals.
