Buntingford Town 2 Codicote 1 TOWN boss Paul Attfield was ecstatic as his side qualified for the Herts County League Cup final "This was a great reaction after last week's disappointing performance and the result was well deserved," he said. "Apart from the opening 15 minutes I thought we dominated the game, but we could have made life easier for ourselves if we could have scored a third from the many easy chances we created. "Since Christmas, the players have really put a lot of effort into their game and it's great for everyone at the club to have another cup final to look forward to." Attfield's team will face Hadley in the final at the County Ground in Letchworth on May Bank Holiday Monday, kick-off 3pm. Saturday's scoreline suggests a close game but, in front of a three-figure crowd, only Town's wastefulness in front of the target kept the winning margin to a minimum. The hosts, defending against a strong wind in the first half, struggled to get a grip in the opening stages and fell behind in the sixth minute when McGaree headed home powerfully from 10 yards after finding space from a right-wing corner. Another close-range header flew just over and a 25-yard free-kick floated inches wide before Town gradually began easing their way into the game. Both Gary Christie and Carl Smith looked dangerous up front, and with Lee Ridings and Barry Lynch gradually winning the midfield battle Town began to dominate proceedings. The deserved equaliser came in the 24 minute when George Garner's corner was headed home by full back Dean Chaffey for his first senior goal at the club. Eight minutes later, Town took the lead when Christie threaded a deft through ball for John Bitting, who outpaced the full back and placed a right footed shot wide of the visiting keeper. Codicote reacted swiftly and could have equalised moments later when some hesitant defending allowed a forward to cannon a shot towards goal. With Kieran Fox well beaten the ball hit Jamie Babbage's knee and deflected on to the crossbar and away from goal. Town held their one-goal advantage until the break and dominated long periods of the second half with the wind at their backs. Some swift counter-attacking football caused the visiting team all sorts of problems and Town began creating regular chances. Christie, twice, Robbie Wilmott, Lynch, Bitting and Garner all wasted excellent chances when clear on goal, with Bitting and Christie also having fine strikes excellently saved by the visiting keeper. With time running out, Codicote threw extra players forward in an attempt to get an equaliser but despite Dean Chaffey clearing one effort from the line from a headed corner, goalkeeper Fox had no meaningful saves to make. The visitors' frustrations were compounded with the late sending-off of Joel Mason who attempted to head-butt Fox. Town had to defend a trio of late long throws with great determination in the closing stages but thoroughly deserved their victory.
