Alongside his 10m synchro partner Tom Daley, the 19-year-old stormed to a podium place in his debut games.

The British pair scored 444.45 to finish behind China (496.98) and the USA (457.11) and scoop Team GB’s seventh diving medal in the history of the Games.

The result sees 22-year-old Daley become the first British diver to win multiple Olympic medals, having also claimed individual 10m platform bronze at London 2012.

In contrast, it brought immediate success for Goodfellow.

The Brits were diving last of the eight pairs and scored 89.64 for their final effort, with 83.62 needed to clinch their podium place.

Goodfellow said: “I knew before we started that we’d be number eight and I knew no matter what situation we were in there would be loads of pressure going into it.

“So I just accepted that and tried to block everything else out and focus on my dives.

“Our fourth dive wasn’t amazing but towards the back end of our list we have a really high degree of difficulty.

“I knew our last two are our two real big ones and we’d have to nail them.”
