Goodfellow wins bronze medal for Great Britain team

MELDRETH-based diving star Daniel Goodfellow won a bronze medal for Great Britain at last week’s European Junior Diving Championships in Belgrade.

The 14-year-old, who attends Melbourn Village College, won his medal in the three-metre springboard event in the U15s Boys’ Group B.

His success came after he qualified in first place in the 3m preliminary round, fending off an incredibly strong field of 21 divers representing 14 different countries.

In a hard-fought final, Daniel scored a massive 432.00 points but missed out on the silver medal by an excruciating 0.1 points.

Goodfellow performed brilliantly in his other events too, finishing fourth in the platform event and fifth in the one-metre springboard.

Goodfellow was snapped up by the GB team after a fabulous effort at the British Elite Diving Championships in Southampton at the beginning of June. At that event he smashed all the qualifying requirements on all three boards (one-metre, three-metre and platform).

Cambridge Dive Team coach, Sam Buck, was delighted with Goodfellow’s performance and said: “This is a fantastic achievement. It’s not easy when you’re away from your home base that you’re used to. Even the spring of the boards is different and alters your ability to perfect a dive which depends on control of every muscle and movement whilst falling through the air in about two seconds.”
