CC Ashell’s Emma Koppe took top spot at the 15-mile time trial near Cardington.

The club took 11 riders to the second inter-club event of the season and it was Koppe who came home as first lady. Justin Layne was equally impressive, finishing second in the men’s race.

Results - J Layne 34:43; J Stuart 35:09; L Danckert 36:39; M Constable 36:51; J McKenzie 36:52; L Holmes 38:07; R Glover 38:28; E Koppe 42:16; G Russell 42:18; T Skelding 42:33; D Carter 42:53.

If 15 miles wasn’t quite enough, the Hitchin Nomads 25 mile open TT was also being run and, once again, CCA had some excellent individual rides.

Tom Trimble was the fastest Ashwell rider in a time of 57:14, which was good enough for second place, ahead of Jason Stuart and Julian Pegg in ninth and 14th respectively. The trio’s results gave CCA the prize for fastest team of three.

A new club 10 mile time trial record has been set by Trimble in the Herts Wheelers 10. A blistering time of 19 minutes 51 earned him second position on the night, just missing out on top spot by 20 seconds. Fellow CCA riders Layne and Stuart were also competing, finishing with very close times of 19:57 and 20:26 respectively.

In the Weekly CCA 10 mile TT, Cameron Woolsey take top honours with a time of 22 minutes 12 seconds beating Will Smith by just 19 seconds.

Results - C Woolsey 22:12; W Smith 23:32; A Saunders 24:45; L Holmes 25:17; C Dyce 25:37; K Stigwood 28:51; E Koppe 29:09; D Wells 29:51; R Bumstead 30:38; J Dow 30:59; J Andrews 31:32; S Watts 33:01; H Dyce 36:49.

The 76-mile Paul Simon Holmes Road Race took place around the Whitwell circuit with CCA’s Will Smith and Anthony Morris lining up for the start.

Morris went off early and hard, breaking away with another rider within the first five minutes, creating a lead of around 50 seconds after just two laps. On the third lap a small group of riders managed to break away from the peloton and join the leading two.

As the race came into the final lap, the gap to the break away had dropped to 40 seconds but not enough to be caught. Morris stayed tight in the leading group as the pace crept up, dropping his initial breakaway partner in the process.

Holding position whilst sprinting for the line, Morris pulled out a fantastic ride to take fourth spot.

Smith, who had stayed with the peloton hoping to catch the breakaway, took the wheel of a race favourite in the lead out for the sprint. This was enough to draw him away from the masses and take a well deserved ninth position.

In the off road Mud Sweat and Gears event at Ickworth, eight Ashwell riders were treated to an unseasonal mud fest after some heavy downpours the day before. The energy sapping course proved to be a tough test for all riders but Harley Pell took first in the girls’ U12 race.

Results - U12 Boys: J Fraser 7th; Felix Field 24th. U12 Girls: H Pell 1st. Vet Lady: J Field 4th. Youth: T Pell 6th. Juvenile: N Field 5th. Open Male: S Field 34th; S Pell 40th.
