ROYSTON Town's remarkable season hit new heights last night with their 2-2 draw with Amersham Town sending them to the top of the South Midlands Division One table.

However, The Crows were far from their best, as the hosts snatched a deserved 88th minute equaliser and a share of the points.

And it was Royston who had the better of the early chances with David Cain heading against the Amersham post, and both Luke Robins and Craig Hammond going close.

Amersham also looked a threat going forward with their two lively forwards making it an uncomfortable night for The Crows defence and they took the lead midway through the half when a forward broke free in the box and rolled the ball past Royston keeper Sam Booth.

However, their lead only lasted five minutes when Robins hammered home a superb 30-yard free-kick into the top right hand corner, leaving the Amersham keeper stranded.

The second half was pretty even, although Royston did struggle to get into a comfortable gear, with their passing game surprisingly missing although they always looked dangerous from their set plays.

Hammond had one shot cleared off the line and then volleyed over, and Chris Hardy wasted a great chance when he also fired over from close range.

However, Hammond made no mistake moments later, with his 25th goal of the season heading home Matt Turl's pin point cross with 20 minutes remaining.

With the clock running down Royston tried to keep possession, but they were punished when some naivety around the box allowed Amersham in with a striker stunning The Crows with a clever header from 12 yards.

Royston manager, Paul Attfield said: "I'm obviously delighted that we have moved to the top of the table, but having said that I'm also equally disappointed with our overall performance.

"The league is too tight to start producing sloppy showings and our all round game was not on song. We looked nervous and lacked fluency, and to concede when we did was a real kick in the teeth.
