Mick Jones says his Royston side are dreaming of a trip to Twickenham after a commanding 17-5 home win over Eastern Counties One leaders Thetford to reach the last four of the London & South East Junior Vase on Saturday.

Tries from John Brain, Louis Dummett and Joe Butcher secured the success which leaves the Heath outfit, who had never been past the quarter-final stage before this season, just three victories from the home of rugby.

Should Royston win their next two games in the competition, they will then face the winners of the south-west area to decide who goes onto Twickenham to battle the northern representatives and head coach Jones, who has previous in this cup, says Royston are good enough to book their final spot in the capital on March 18.

Jones told the Crow: “We worked really hard on all aspects of our game and we deserved to take the win.

“Our gameplan of fronting them up worked well and we played some really nice stuff.

“I think Thetford were the toughest draw we could get in the London region so I don’t see why we can’t now go all the way if we can keep our personnel injury-free.

“Confidence is high and we see it as a challenge to finish our season on a real high.

“This is now the biggest thing left in our season and it would be great for the town if we could bring some silverware back to Royston.

“I got to the final of this competition during my time at Old Cantabrigians but although we missed out, it was great for everyone at the club to go that far and I would love to go one better here.”

The Crows will face one of Hastings & Bexhill, Maldon or Old Whitgiftian or New Milton & District, who are due to face off on Feburary 4 following a postponement due to a frozen pitch, with the draw to be made soon.

Royston turn their attentions back to Herts/Middlesex One action on Saturday as they welcome third-placed London French.

Jones continued: “We’re missing a couple of players [Jacob Boyce, Dan Ritsema and Will Cottrell] due to injury but apart from that we’re full-strength and raring to go.

“We’re looking to get revenge after we pushed them hard in the reverse fixture in October and hopefully we can do that and cement our place in the top four with another win.”
