Cricket: Wilson sees Bassingbourn past Walden
A classy unbeaten 75 from Adrian Wilson and fine new-ball bowling guided Bassingbourn to victory over Saffron Walden 4ths in Division Junior 4 South.
Despite early morning rain, the game went ahead with Bassingbourn being asked to bat first. The Walden opening bowlers started well, dismissing their counterparts cheaply to leave Bassingbourn 16-2.
Scott Bates and Wilson rebuilt the innings, seeing the score to 59 before the former departed. That became 80-6 as Bassingbourn were struggling to post a decent total.
Lewis Rawlinson carried on last week’s good form with a quick fire 29 but it was Wilson who was the main catalyst to Bassingbourn setting a target of 178.
Early pressure was required and opening bowlers Rawlinson and Ben Allen provided just that. Exceptional bowling saw four early dismissals behind the wicket with keeper Bates taking three victims and a spectacular diving effort in the gully from Richard Scott being the pick of the catches.
Only two batsmen reached double figures as Rawlinson and Allen ended up with figures of 3-31 and 4-29 respectively. Two run outs ended the match as Saffron Walden were all out for 69 inside 22 overs.
The win sees Bassingbourn go joint top of the division with the top two teams meeting next week.
