GRENEWAY School were crowned North Herts Schools Cricket Champions following a fine victory against Knights Templar School at Letchworth Cricket Club.

The league encounter had ended with a narrow victory for the Baldock School, and they won the toss and decided to bat.

After a slow start, caused by crisp bowling from skipper Toby Fynn and Jack Beck, Papworth began to punish anything short of a length.

Then a rising delivery from Fynn was caught expertly at mid-off by Tom Heginbottom.

Bergman and Papworth built a good total of 52-1 before the former was superbly caught and bowled by Neil Addison.

Papworth then fell to a catch by Jamie Smith off Jordan Paterson-Proto's beguiling off spin.

After a drinks break Corey Hill and Tom Heginbottom were bought into the attack with immediate results as Heginbottom bowled Kostic and then ran out Goss.

Hill then kept KTS pinned down at the other end as they struggled to 103- 6 off their allotted 20 overs.

Excellent Greneway fielding had also made it very difficult for KTS to get a grip on the game.

Greneway then sent out openers Beck and Addison to bring home the title.

Their attacking attitude immediately put a subdued KTS on the defensive and even when both batsmen fell, after some good shots, Greneway did not look in danger.

The next partnership at the crease proved to be the match winning one as the captain Fynn set about the KTS attack with vice-captain Smith.

They played an exquisite range of shots, all around the ground and along with the heat, KTS began to wilt.

Smith rode his luck a few times but both remained unbeaten to steer Greneway to its first ever Year 7 Championship and joyous celebrations as Smith hit the winning boundary.
