Confident Melbourn cause hell for Bumpstead

MELBOURN returned to winning ways in emphatic style on Saturday in a performance which the club hopes will lay the foundations for the rest of the season.

In conditions that both teams initially found hard to get to grips with it was Melbourn who had all the early pressure and after 20 minutes had the lead when a long Andrew Gray throw from the right hand side was headed home by captain Jason Gray.

Melbourn quickly doubled the advantage soon after. This time a tantalising through ball by Chaz Hassan had both defender and 'keeper running for the ball only for Lee Edmans to slip between the two and with an excellent first touch taking him away from both he was able to slot home.

Melbourn continued to carry the game to their opponents and the passing of Jason Gray, Ben Fox and Michael Wagstaff in midfield dictated much of the play.

With 10 minutes of the half to go an Andrew Gray throw was not cleared and the ball eventually found its way to Fox on the edge of the box who rifled the ball home for Melbourn's third.

As the half drew to a close, Melbourn switched off early and Mark Ferrari pulled off a stunning save to ensure the visitors went in to half-time with a clean sheet.

Unfortunately the second half had a familiar edge to it with Melbourn not really concentrating and a defensive mix up allowed Helions to pull one back.

The second half became a scrappy affair and it wasn't until the closing minutes that Melbourn finished their hosts off when some good work down the right from Edmans led to a neat cut back to Hassan who rifled home at the second time of asking for his first goal for Melbourn.

Mick Walker was pleased with the result and the much needed three points and will now prepare his team for the sterner test of Cambridge University Press reserves this Saturday.
