DESPITE being two-up in the first quarter Colts were unable to complete the win as Stevenage took the points.

Colts began their first league match of the season looking fitter and well-disciplined, and after a sensational strike from Jack Staley found the top corner, the omens were good.

Callum Turner made it two soon after, guiding in a fine ball from an in-form Thomas Robson. Both sides looked evenly matched though, and it was not long before the visitors penetrated Colts' defence and pulled one back.

The scores would have been levelled just before half time but for an outstanding last-ditch tackle from Turner.

Stevenage began the second half with an impressive urgency which was rewarded quickly when they capitalised on a hesitation in the Colts defence.

They then took the lead after a corner kick was punched away by keeper Will Hart only to rebound off a defender into the net.

Colts dug in really well and created several chances, but the visitors put the game beyond reach with a classic "route-one" strike

Bassingbourn Youth U-10 A 2

Biggleswade Blue & White A 6

FROM the start the two teams were evenly matched and the first half saw opportunities for both teams but no goals.

From the re-start an attack by Biggleswade saw a shot deflected into the goal by a Bassingbourn player, this spurred the visitors on and they were soon 3-0 up.

Bassingbourn fought back and a strong run from Smith got them their first goal. Biggleswade made it 4-1 with Bassingbourn still celebrating their goal.

Bassingbourn produced some fine runs and good link-up play and dogged persistence from Holcroft gave him his first goal of the season and Bassingbourn's second.

However, it was Biggleswade who were to finish stronger adding another two goals to their tally.

Biggleswade Blue & White B 1

BASSINGBOURN'S B team continued their strong start to the season, although having missed a number of chances, it was Biggleswade who were to open the scoring, breaking from a Bassingbourn attack.

Bassingbourn were hit back and continued to push forward, creating chance after chance until O'Connor finally found the net.

Unfortunately after what was looking like another positive result for the home team, with thunder and lightning all around and two minutes left on the clock, both managers decided for the safety of the players to end the game, with both teams sharing the points.

Bishop's Stortford Rovers U-13 3

Baldock Knights 8

KNIGHTS started off well with a good display of possession football and started to take hold of the game.

This soon saw Baldock take the lead with a well taken goal from George Laurence after being set up by Kai Day.

Straight from the kick off saw Baldock's Charan Basra with a shot that just missed the post and he was unlucky not to put the visitors up further.

Baldock's possession play, once again, saw Kai Day setting up yet another goal, this time for Jordon Davis who made it 2-0.

Stortford, were by now, employing long ball tactics and almost scored but for some quick thinking from Baldock's goalkeeper, Josh Dobson who made a fine save from a Rovers striker.

Knights kept up the pressure and the superb Kai Day completed his hat-trick of assists setting up Charan Basra, who struck a ferocious ball to put Baldock 3-0 up.

Stortford persisted with a long ball game and a good delivery from midfield saw the home side pull a goal back.

Charan Basra and George Laurence finished off the first half with some strong moves and Basra finally made it 4-1 at half time with a cool finish.

The second half started much the same as the first half ended with Baldock on the attack and Chris Weeks and Charan Basra both creating chances.

Basra started to completely dominate the midfield and his excellence paid off showing some good skill and setting up goal number five for Jordon Davis.

Stortford soon came back after a mistake in the normally stable Baldock defence, allowed them to reduce the score to 5-2.

This revival was short lived, as the lively Basra picked up a loose ball, rounded several defenders and unleashed a spectacular shot to score the Knights sixth of the game.

Baldock's Jordon Morley, whose running was causing all sorts of trouble, beat three players to set up a pass for the waiting George Laurence who made it 7-2.

Although Stortford pulled a late goal back, Basra finished off the game with an individual goal, his fourth of the match.

Bedwell Rangers Blue U-11 2

Melbourn Dynamos Panthers 6

MELBOURN got their first league win of the season against a well organised Bedwell side.

The early exchanges were even with chances at both ends, but Dynamos opened the scoring when Byron Lawrence rifled home from 20 yards with a fierce strike.

The second came when Nathan Henry split the home defence with a quality pass to set the speedy Patrick Hopper clear, with just the keeper to beat, which he duly did with the calmest of finishes into the bottom corner.

With half-time approaching and Dynamos having a lion's share of the possession, Sam Webb was brought down in the box for a penalty, however Henrys calmly taken kick came back of the post and away to safety.

Moments later Bedwell broke away when the Melbourn defence failed to clear a hopeful kick up front and the striker finished well, giving Nick Thompson no chance.

The first to score in the second half was going to be the most important of the game and it was Henry that grabbed it for the away side, with a fine right foot strike from outside the area, which took a deflection before finding its way into the net.

Melbourn were starting to turn on the style now and beginning to pass for fun, this lead to the best team goal of the game when Webb at the far post volleyed home from six yards for the fourth after a good move.

Hard working Craig Stalker claimed the fifth before Lawrence completed the Melbourn scoring

The home team never gave up and even the hard working Andrew Wilkins could not prevent Bedwell getting a second late on after some good football from the home side's number 11.

Royston Town Colts U-12 5

Echo Youth 3

Eight goals meant there was plenty of action at Roysia School as Colts took on Echo Youth from Watford in their first match of the county cup competition.

The hosts took a fourth minute lead when they won a throw on the left that was crossed in by King and met by a charging Willis-Wight who smashed the ball home.

The heavens opened and in torrential rain Anderson cleared a visitors' corner which was met in the midfield, played back to King who immediately knocked the ball through to meet Wills-Wright's well- timed run.

A thunderous shot followed forcing the keeper to parry into the path of town support with Nicky Garbut confidently finding the back of the net. After the restart Town maintained their dominance.

With King and Adam Sartini bossing the midfield another goal seemed inevitable.

When it duly arrived it was a pass from King which put Heslam into space who fired past the keeper.

The second half started similar to the first with both sides taking a few minutes to get back into the match.

Leighton then collected the ball in the middle and worked a one-two with King and fed Sartini.

A swift change of direction gave space for a fine shot that dipped towards the left post and was met by Heslam who tucked it neatly away for his second of the match.

Echo scored shortly afterwards with a fine run down the right that outflanked the Colts defence.

Perhaps it was shock from the sudden change in possession that caused Town's defence to be caught asleep and which gifted Echo their second goal.

Indeed excellent keeping from Long spared Town further blushes. In the final 10 minutes Colts reasserted their dominance of this match with Leighton going close before finding Willis-Wright in space who converted to leave Town 5-2 ahead.

However the final blow fell to Echo who countered swiftly from a cleared corner and switched play sweetly to put their striker clean through on the left side of the park. He did not need a second chance to loft the ball over a stranded Long, but it was too late to prevent Town progressing.

Potton Colts 0

Letchworth Eagles Yellows 12

THIS was another high scoring win for the Yellows, with some stunning goals from an increasingly confident team.

The first goal came within the first minute, and it was pretty much one-way traffic from then on.

Letchworth's strikers, Caspar Courlander (2) and Jordan Leech-Lev (3) were on song once more, as were midfielders Chris Moore (2) and Adam Morris (2) but the best goal was a smashing volley from Kyle Males.

Potton maintained discipline throughout and even though the match was so one sided, they continued to defend with great energy, especially the number five who took two direct hits in the face, but never gave up.

Royston Town Colts U-9 1

Melbourn Dynamos Panthers 1

A CLOSE game saw Panthers earn a well-deserved draw with neighbours Royston.

Melbourn began well playing the ball neatly up to mobile front two Charles Johnson and Ben Webb, the latter testing the Town keeper with a low shot following Sam Bedlow's cross.

Royston were well organised, getting behind the ball and moving collectively going forward.

The home side almost took the lead as a fine Rhys Westbury shot was matched by a brilliant Ross Cockburn save, diving to low his right.

Royston took the lead on the break when a fabulous pass was latched on to by Bradley Calvert who slotted through the keeper's legs with a confident finish.

Melbourn emerged after half-time determined to make their possession count and, driven from the back by Alex Maskell and James Fowkes, created a succession of openings matched by a fine defence.

In the dying minutes the deserved equaliser came when midfield dynamo James Rushton controlled the ball on halfway with his head and then launched a volley into the air which descended into the top left corner, giving the keeper no chance.

- A single goal from Mackenzie Harris gave Colts' B team a deserved 1-0 win against Melbourn in game they dominated from start to finish.
