With the cricket season only five weeks away, Reed will be seeking new stars to shine in their first team because past regulars are unavailable. Veteran slow bowler Richard Jerome had already announced his departure, but opening batsman Tom Fulk, away at university, has accepted a coaching position that will keep him in Yorkshire for the summer. And a winter football injury to a cruciate ligament means wicketkeeper-batsman Stuart Smith will miss the season. On the positive side, Reed have attracted two players in fast bowler Andy Young and wicketkeeper-batsman Richard Poole. Former player Chris Shorrock, who moved to Southampton last summer, may be returning, having moved back to the North London area. There is also ample opportunity for youngsters from Reed Colts to step up into first team contention. However, first team skipper Simon Jackson, anxious to improve on last year's mid-table finish in the Saracens Herts League Division Two, would welcome the recruitment of experienced quality players. He said: "This season is a major turning point for our club. For the first time, we are entering three teams into the Hertfordshire League. "Most weekends we will be running five teams - three on Saturdays and two on Sundays. As well as the Saturday league programme we offer league, cup and transitional cricket opportunities on a Sunday. "With an excellent wicket and superb clubhouse facilities, we like to think that we will be an attractive option for serious and ambitious cricketers from the local area. We are keen to attract new members and they will be made very welcome." Reed celebrate their 50th anniversary season and a series of celebratory events are planned, including a gala dinner and dance on Friday, July 14. Potential members can contact Simon Jackson on 07748 930289. - Hatley & Arrington Cricket Club will be led on the field this season by the same father and son combination as last year. At the club's annual meeting last week, Frank Hooley was re-elected captain and his son Steve vice-captain. Other key officials were also re-elected, including Mick Marshall (president), Harold Nickerson (secretary) and Tim Davenport (treasurer). Hatley, who play Sunday afternoon friendly games, still have free dates on July 2 and August 13. Any local clubs who would like a fixture on either of those dates should contact Phil Hastings on 01763 853744.
