A FORMER Royston Town Colt is looking to make the breakthrough at Histon after he was handed a squad number and new contract.

Seventeen-year-old Callum Stewart has had a busy few weeks, making his first-team debut in the Stutes' 2-0 win at Nuneaton before an accomplished performance in their 4-0 victory at Bishop's Stortford on Friday.

The talented centre-back and son of former Royston Town chairman Rob Stewart is now discussing terms on a contract and hopes to be part of manager Steve Fallon's future plans.

He told The Crow: "It's all been very positive and I'm looking forward to the season ahead. There's not many players my age that get offered a contract, and I was really surprised when I was given a squad number, but obviously really pleased.

"I wasn't expecting to be talking about contracts until the end of this season, which would have been the second year of my scholarship.

"So to be at this stage so soon is very pleasing. Hopefully, I can be part of the Histon squad for many years to come."

Stewart, who captained both Histon under-18s and Cambridgeshire under-18s, has been training with the first-team since the beginning of last month, alongside fellow youth team players Adam Dalby, Lee Brennan, and Daniel Sparkes.

He said: "I've played 45 minutes in both pre-season games, and I think I've done well.

"I've helped keep two clean sheets, and for a defender that's what it's all about. It's been a great experience.

"The boss has shown that he is prepared to give young players a chance and that's a great sign for us.

"It's not that often that you get a 17-year-old centre-back playing in the Blue Square Premier Division, so I'm proud to have been given the chance. I'm just looking to learn from the senior players and coaches and get involved as much as possible."

Stewart who is a former Ipswich Town junior, started his fledgling career as a Royston Town Colt and was captain in the under-sixes to under-nines.

His former Colts teammate and goalkeeper Grant Fisher is also making strides with Blue Square Premier rivals Torquay United.

Stewart said: "Royston Town Colts gave me a great start in my footballing career.

"It was a good place to learn, and it's a club that really helps young players develop.
