Royston Golf Club round-up

ROBIN Coles and Joan Buckerfield, both past captains of Royston Golf Club, won the mixed Turkey Trot at the club on Saturday.

The pair amassed an amazing 39 stableford points in the foursomes format to take the spoils on a tricky scoring day, with Barry Buckerfield and Carolyn Devaney finishing with 34 to take the runners-up spot. Ken Flint and Sue Bidwell also had 34 and were closely followed by Dave Millership and Alice Lewis on 33.

Club captain, Dave Crossley and ladies’ skipper, Karen Pearson, had a day to forget as they took home the christmas puddings for the lowest score.

Meanwhile, Scott Parnell fired an impressive level-par to win Division One of the Men’s Medal on Sunday. The five-handicapper hit four bogeys and four birdies to finish ahead of Peter Law (79-12=67) and Adrian Shoebridge (75-8=67).

Division Two was a closer affair as the top two could only be separated on countback and it was Chris Coote who had the better back-nine to edge out David Caunce. Both players finished on nett 65 and have had their handicaps reduced by two.

Six players tied for third spot, with the ever-improving Mark Crowley finishing ahead of Darren Evans, Mick Joyner, Gary Pullin, Andy Forbes and Paul Noonan on countback with a nett score of 26.5 on the back-nine.

Junior, Robert Brain, won the Saturday Stableford with a superb round of 40 points, finishing four points clear of Keith Taylor, Brian Holson and Will Cooper. Brain’s handicap has now been cut to 12.5 – a reduction of seven shots this year.

In another result, Paul Mepham and Simon Thompson won the Fourball Betterball Stableford event with 40 points. Adam Woods and Ian Rumbold finished runners-up on countback with 39 ahead of Mial Walker and Barry Rouse.
