Sawston II (214-9) beat Cokenach (187-7).

COKENACH made a spirited attempt to inflict a first defeat of the season on the Division 1B leaders, but fell just short.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sawston II made a rapid start led by their in-form opener David Seaman who was averaging 288 prior to the game.

A superb spell of swing and seam bowling from Alex Yarndell (4-39) reduced Sawston II to 42-3.

Yardnell then proceeded to take his fourth wicket of the match helped by an impressive leg-side catch from wicket-keeper John Gill.

Sawston II continued to accumulate runs on a very fast outfield and reached 100-4 in the 20th over.

An all-spin attack of Jack Sirett (2-34) and Rob Stone (2-37) was introduced and Sirett immediately captured the important wicket of Seaman (64) in his first over.

Skipper Phil Seale and Sirett then combined for an excellent run out and the ninth wicket but Cokenach could not keep Sawston beneath 200 as an aggressive last wicket partnership between Junior Thomas (21no) and Josh Ives (22no) enabled the home team to reach 214.

The Cokenach reply got off to a bad start with openers Matt Stevens (2) and John Gill (2) falling in the first two overs.

Peter Clarke (29) and Alec Eve (57) re-built the innings with an excellent partnership before Clarke was run out.

Luke Masterson (2-31) bowled a very tight 10 over spell, picking up the wickets ofSeale (11) and Harry Lee(0) in consecutive balls.

Cokenach had left themselves too much to do and it was left to Yarndell (24no) and Nigel Sirett (15no) to secure batting bonus points, but not the victory.
