A FINE display from Royston's Michael Clapham could not prevent Cambridgeshire Juniors losing 10-8 to Bedfordshire. Clapham comfortably won both his singles matches, as well as teaming up with Bar Hill's Chad Miles to win in the foursomes. There was also success in the foursomes for Royston members James Smith and James Sandford, while Daniel Smith narrowly lost. - Anne Evans won the ladies April Medal at Royston Golf Club last Thursday. Despite strong winds, she won by two shots from Sally Campbell-Gray, and attributed her win to some fine putting on the slick greens. Joan Smith won the alternate medal on Saturday, but only on countback from Jo Hilliard. The juniors had a busy week of events that culminated in their medal on Saturday. Daniel Smith got the better of his elder brother James and won his first medal of the year, shooting a nett 66 from his 28 handicap. James Smith finished second (86-17=69), Hugo Christie was third (90-19=71), and Michael Clapham fourth (88-16=72). The club also hosted several county matches with the under 14s playing Bedfordshire, the under 16s playing Suffolk, and the under 18s trial. All squads are benefiting from coaching sessions with Sean Clark at Royston, who also coaches the under 12s. The men's fourball stableford attracted a large entry on Sunday and David Crossley and vice-captain Mick Hall were triumphant with 43 points. Runners up on count-back were Gary Hainsworth and Trevor Deards, who pipped Ian Dell and Nick Leah. Also finishing with 42 points were Darren Farmer and Adrian Shoebridge. - Royston Golf Club is running free golf coaching taster sessions for lady beginners on Saturday, April 22, for junior girls the following week, and on Saturday, May 6 for all-comers.
