JM Judokwai Club members from Greneway, Roysia and Meridian schools completed in a tournament last Sunday, alongside 177 other children from schools throughout Hertfordshire. Amy Johnson and Kellie Lucken fought in the lowest under-32K weight category. Amy was much lighter than her opponents, but still managed to take the bronze medal, with Kellie fighting well to win silver. Charlotte Raymond won a bronze medal in the under-40K class, but the performance of the day came from Chloe Fisher in the under-48K class. Her opposition were much older and more experienced Judo players, but Chloe did herself proud. Competing for Roysia Middle School in the 8-10 age bands, Emma Reid outclassed the opposition to take a deserved gold medal in the under-40K class. Sophie Francombe won silver in the under-44K class and Lucy Close, a relative novice, fought well in the under-36K class. John Fowler had a great weekend by gaining his yellow belt on the Saturday and then proving himself worthy of that grade by winning a bronze medal in the highly competitive under-38K class. Also in this age band Kristofer Francombe suffering badly from a chest infection could not raise his game to previous outstanding levels to compete for a medal place. In the11-13 age band, Neil Smith had some tough fights at the lower end of both age and weight in his category and managed to gain a bronze medal in the under-48K class. Leonie Hall was the star performer, showing great fighting spirit to take a well-earned bronze in the under-40K class, which could have easily been more. Elsewhere, although not managing to get to a final placing, Dawn Smith was another of the newer members to take part, and showed up well in her bouts. Jonathon Stocks is another whose inexperience at this level saw his day as one to enjoy rather than win medals, although rising star in the 16-year-old division Ben Chapple of Meridian School scrambled to a bronze medal place. The medal tally of one gold, one silver and three bronze put Roysia ahead of Greneway's tally in the medal table.
