Great Chishill 2

THE top two sides in BIS League Division 3A met on Saturday, with Chishill taking the three points, to send them clear at the top of the table.

Heavy rain before the game had taken its toll on the pitch, making playing conditions difficult.

The hosts were clearly on top in the first half hour. They were winning the physical battle, keeping the visitors on the back foot.

With good service from Steeple's man-of-the-match Charlie Prothero and Karl Parr, the Steeple strikers Ben Holt and Roy Dunsford were a constant threat to the strong Chishill defence.

The prolific Holt came closest with a shot that clipped the crossbar.

As both sides continued to play good passing football a breakthrough was always likely and a flowing move from Steeple involving Ben Morris and the impressive Max Carlton on the overlap nearly produced this for Roy Dunsford but his header was powered wide.

Despite the pressure, Ian Gallagher was never severely tested in Chishill's goal, and the away side slowly worked their way into the game.

The final 15 minutes of the half belonged to Chishill. Oli Fitzgerald looked to have found a way through Morden's defence, only to be fouled on the edge of the box.

Jonathan Drury then had the first glimpse of goal for Chishill, breaking down the left, only to scoff his shot wide.

Moments later, he was in the right place at the right time, sliding the ball over the line from Luke Tyler's low, driven cross.

The second half was a more even contest, as Chishill played with more belief now they had their noses in front.

They still rode their luck at times though, with Steeple heading against the crossbar, and seeing a low cross-shot skim right across the soggy goalmouth.

With 20 minutes remaining Chishill's lead was doubled. Steve McGee controlled Gallgher's long kick upfield, before firing over the keeper from the edge of the box.

Steeple piled on the pressure as the game went on, and the visitors had to deal with a number of quality crosses, but they held on for win number 12.
