Charity the winner in trophy tie

THE annual Peter Harrup Memorial Trophy match between Melbourn and Meldreth was played on Saturday after being rained off in May.

Melbourn were the hosts for this, the seventh event in memory of their captain Peter Harrup, with this year's chosen charity being the Breast Cancer campaign.

When the original match was called off, the players enjoyed a quiz contest instead, which raised £36.

This time the sun shone as president Anne Howard welcomed the guests and the afternoon started with a spider competition, the men's prize going to D Peacock (Meldreth) and the ladies' prize to J Rolph (Melbourn).

The competition was keen but played in good spirit despite being interrupted halfway through by a sharp shower causing a delay.

The rains came again just as the players were leaving the green and it was not until everyone had enjoyed the tea supplied by the ladies of Melbourn that thoughts went to the result.

After a check and re-check, it was announced that the result was a tie, each team had scored 93 shots, won three rinks and also, on count back, had each won 53 ends.

It was agreed that everyone had a most enjoyable day and the real winner was the chosen charity, as £131 will be added to that already raised bringing the running total to £273.75.
