ROYSTON TOWN boss Paul Attfield says he is looking forward to ending the season on a high ahead of tonight’s (Thursday) Floodlit Cup final against Tring Athletic.

The Crows missed out on a second place league finish after losing 2-1 away at Haringey Borough on Saturday, but they have the opportunity to win the Floodlit Cup for the third consecutive year against the team that pipped them to second place.

The match takes place at Broxbourne Borough’s Goffs Lane ground with kick off at 7.45pm and Attfield says he has a full-strength side to choose from.

“It’s always a good way to finish the season and we have a good chance of winning it for the third time,” said Attfield.

“It doesn’t matter what cup competition it is, winning any trophy three times in a row is a magnificent achievement. We’ve let ourselves down in cup competitions this season but this is a chance for us to end on a high.

“I’ve always taken every cup competition seriously and I know the players never take any game lightly so they will be up for the match there’s no doubt about that.”

The Crows drew 1-1 with Tring in the away league fixture back in September while a solitary Carl Edwards strike was enough to give Royston a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture at the beginning of January at Garden Walk.

Attfield is expecting another tough encounter against Athletic as they were the only side in the division to really pose a threat to Chalfont St Peter’s title-winning campaign in the last two months of the season.

He added: “We’ve had some really good, tough games against Tring over the last two seasons. They are the only team that’s really given Chalfont a challenge this season and they are a good side.

“They won a cup game on Monday night (St Marys Cup) so they will be keen to get a second cup win inside a week.”

Whatever the outcome tonight, Attfield says his team have has had an improved league campaign compared to last year and with a few new additions over the summer, he is hoping the club can improve yet again and win promotion next time out.

He said: “Considering the injury problems we’ve had this year compared to last year I would say we’ve definitely improved as far as the league is concerned.

“We know what we want to do over the summer in terms of what positions we need to strengthen and the structure of the club.

“Last year we didn’t stop playing until the middle of May but this year we will have a decent eight or nine-week break.”
