THE traditional putting out by the captains from last year and the drive in by the 2007 captains took place at Heydon Grange Golf and Country Club on Saturday.

Last year's captains putting out were Malcolm Knobel-Forbes, club captain, Roz McKenzie, ladies and Ron Webster, seniors.

The new Captains driving in were Tony Leigh, club captain, Daphne Borham, ladies and Alan Parkes, seniors.

Prior to the drive in, club members placed markers on the first fairway to guess where the drives would end up.

There were some fairly pessimistic forecasts but all captains managed to strike the ball cleanly sending them well down the fairway.

There followed an 18 hole Stableford competition, featuring some 60 golfers over the Essex and Cambridge courses. The winners were as follows:

Men: Steve Miller 43 points, ladies Tamini Hurst 37 points, seniors Colin Edge 44 points

Green fees for guests were kindly donated by Heydon Grange to this year's charities and the amount raised from these and other member donations totalled nearly £700.

The two medals played last week saw two young players take the prizes.

On Saturday 15-year-old Tom Trimble bettered his handicap by three shots to finish ahead of Eddie Collins and Stuart Phillips. The 10 handicapper continued his good run of results, that may see him edge into one of the scratch teams.

On a brilliant Spring morning last Friday, a Royston team lead by the the captain, Micky Hall, including the president, chairman and four other past captains, inflicted a heavy defeat on a team from the senior section of the club, lead by their captain Roy Ward, who is also the Vice Captain of RGC.

Micky lead from the front with his partner John Nicholl, and finished their match on the 15th hole with a birdie, against Roy and his partner Doug Moule.

The atch was contested by 30 pairs from each side, which is a record, and the lunch, and apres lunch activities, went on well into the afternoon.

Octogenarian Walter Shaw and his partner were one of the few Pulsatilla Winners, narrowly defeating president Tom Shaw and Dickie New.

New, the chairman of greens, was congratulated on the state of the course, which was obviously appreciated by the other members of the RGC team.
