CLUB captain Roy Ward struck his first hole-in-one at Royston Golf Club on Sunday.

Playing in the Toyota-sponsored Eden Bridge Greensomes, his perfect shot was at the 146-yard sixth hole.

Had it been at the same event last year, the shot would have won the captain a car. This year, however, the only thing it landed him was a large bar bill.

Peter Prentice and Ian Coath won the event with 41 points, and were closely followed by Mick Merry and Alastair Horwood.

The second-placed pairing pushed Darren Ellis and Adrian Shoebridge into third place on countback after both pairs finished on 40 points.

Prentice and Coath, five and eight handicappers respectfully, cruised in on the back nine with a 33, for 22 points to add to their steady 19 points on the front nine.

Merry and Horwood had hit eight fours and a two on the back nine, but their front nine of 17 points left them with too much to do.

Carolyn Devaney rounded off a superb year of performances to capture the bronze division in the Ladies Autumn Meeting with a net 70.

Marjory Humphreys finished second, five shots behind.

Pam Bonnett was the winner of the silver division, with Jane Millership second and Mary Mitchell third.

This coming Sunday sees the club host their annual fixture with Cambridge University.

The match is the oldest in the calendar for both teams, dating back to the conception of the club in 1892.
