THE weekend saw success for Baldock and District Canoe Club members Michelle Grudzinski and Terry Griffiths at Bedford Viking Kayak Club.

Newly promoted Grudzinski competed in the Division Three Ladies Kayak Event in her first full season of competition.

On Saturday she put in a good performance in difficult conditions to achieve the fourth fastest time.

Her second run was again a good performance and faster and fewer penalties but she was denied a top three finish by a single second.

Sunday saw Grudzinski come back with a more determined stance and her first run was pretty quick and with a few penalties, this stood her in third place.

Her second run was again a very good run but wind conditions meant more penalties, but no other competitors managed to improve so she gained a much deserved third place.

Grudzinski also managed to take second place in the Division Four Canadian Doubles (C2), paddling with a new partner as her regular partner Carmel Buttimer was out of action with a broken wrist that puts an end to their season.

This year veteran Griffiths is currently ranked number two in the country and he is determined to regain his number one spot back.

The Veteran Class runs separately from National Rankings, but competing on the same courses.

Saturday saw him competing against the current number one and the two of them proved to be a class apart from the other Veterans.

Again the wind played a big part in proceedings with Griffiths narrowly finishing second, both runs being fast, but single penalties giving his competitor the edge.

Sunday was a different matter and a renewed Griffiths proved that he can put in fast clean runs and his first run was just that and comparable with the Division One and Premier judges.

His second run saw a single penalty, but the pressure was too much for the number one competitor who was second best to Griffiths this time.

With the few remaining events, Griffiths has a reasonable chance of regaining the top spot.

- Recently, brothers Patrick and Colin Tomkins took part in an International Canoe Polo Tournament in Ypres, Belgium.

Despite losing a team member through injury at the quarter final stage, the substitute proved to be a worthy stand in to enable the Baldock Canoe Club members to win the Division Two trophy against teams from all over Europe.
