Sprinter Cameron Webb is hoping to beat his personal best and win a place in the English Schools Championships.
The 16-year-old Meridian School student, who runs the 200m, equalled his personal best in Watford, taking first place in the Herts Schools Championships.
Webb, who also runs for Stevenage and North Herts Athletics club, recorded a time of 23.1 seconds.
He said: "I was over the moon at equalling by personal best.
"It was a good race, and despite getting off to a bad start, I was quite comfortable."
At the moment, Webb is two tenths of a second off the English Schools Championship qualifying time of 22.9 secs.

"I've got a few more weeks to achieve this time and I'm quite confident," said Webb.
"It means I'll have to beat my personal best in the process so it will be tough."
The Year 11 student is also doing his GCSEs, and is hoping to get the grades that will see him enrol at Cambridge Regional College in September, where he will study sports studies.
He said: "It's quite difficult at the moment, what with juggling my studying and exams with the running.
"I'm working hard and hopefully I will do well in both.
"After my exams, I'm going to put even more work into getting that English Schools Championship qualifying time. I have a few more attempts coming up, and it would mean a lot to me if I was to get there.
"One day I would love to be in the Great Britain team - so all this is good practice.
