Bowlers return to the greens as new season begins at Royston Bowls Club

The club, which was founded in 1927, now boasts nearly 100 members of all abilities from the very friendly to the very competitive.

Bowls still carries the stigma of being a game associated with the elderly but at Royston Bowls Club it is definitely is a sport for all ages.

The club can boast a host of successes as one of the most accomplished and prominent in Hertfordshire.

It boats the current Hertfordshire Singles champions - Glenn Williams, 21, and Rachel Tremlett, 18 - both of whom have been invited to trial for the Bowls England international teams next month at Royal Leamington Spa.

Saturday’s open day was blessed with good weather and warm sunshine and the green was opened by club president Keith Dockree and other officials, who welcomed members old and new and wished them a successful and enjoyable season.

The president’s charity of choice this season is the Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Unit for which the proceeds of the spider match were donated.

The spider prize, a customary bottle of whiskey, was won by Joan Knights.

The afternoon continued with 40 members playing in the annual spoon drive which was also won by Joan. Kay Warren finished second.

On Sunday the club held its annual charity spoon drive playing for the Stan Baker Memorial Trophy.

Twenty-four members took to the grass rinks in warm sunshine for an afternoon of play.

The overall trophy was eventually won by Glenn with 24 shots.

The proceeds of the afternoon, including that of the raffle, totalled £100 and are being donated in aid of the Meldreth Manor School.
