Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club members were out to gain points for their regional rankings and qualification for the British Championship when they travelled to Braintree on Sunday.

With the original event having been cancelled because of a flooded track two weeks ago, a number of riders had to miss the event due to prior arrangements but those who made the trip were the first to try out the new start hill and start gate system, which the club completed only the previous day.

The Rockets had 15 riders spread across the classes, and Wayne Gutteridge led the way as he finished second in the 13-14 year class, a performance which was enough for the judges to award him with "rider of the day" trophy.

The youngest riders were the six-and-under class, where Daniel Blanche finished third ahead of fifth placed Oliver Snelling, and Ted Dalleywater in sixth.

In the seven-eight year class Ethan Lewis reached the main final where he finished fifth, and in the B final, Aaron Dalleywater was fourth, with Zak Foreman fifth, and Bradan Blanche eighth.

In the nine-10 year group two Rockets made the A final, won by James Handleigh, with Louis Burton third, while in the B final, Kyle Gutteridge also won his race.

The 11-12 year class saw Ben Gutteridge finish fourth and team mate Aston Blanche came seventh.

In the 13-14 year class Wayne Gutteridge collected second place, while in the cruiser classes Danny Bateman finished third in the 13-16 year class, and in the 40+ class Paul Bateman held on for second place overall.

The next event on the race calendar is the fourth round of the National Series at Cheddar next weekend where the Rockets riders will be out in force to gain points - this time towards their national rankings.
