THE Royston BMX Racing Club hopes to enlist new members after a promotion event at the Burns Road track on Saturday afternoon.

Novice riders were given the opportunity to try a sport which is to be included in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Club chairman Phil Townsend said: "The threatened rain showers no doubt kept some people away.

"Those that did attend had a good time and we are confident that the efforts put in by club members will be rewarded with new riders at the Tuesday evening practice sessions," he said.

And to add to the event, dancers from the Royston Dance Academy put on a good display in difficult conditions to open proceedings.

This year the club has sponsorship from Royston-based JK Environmental, which provides one of its vehicles to act as a backdrop for a display of photographs of club members in new race kit, which was sponsored by JK Environmental and Custom Rider BMX of Letchworth.

Trophies awarded after the racing were sponsored by Barkway Service Station, which has provided club medals for use throughout the year.

Other sponsors include Sports Kit, Royston Autocare, Wisdom Carpets, The Factory Shop, VB Trophies, Hale Printers, Odsey Service Station, Somerfield, Burns Road Co-op and Bedfordshire Auto Electrics.

The first class on the track was the under-eight experts where Aaron Dalleywater took second place splitting the Blanche cousins, with Braden winning and Daniel finishing third.

In the under-eight novice class James Denmam was first home, ahead of Kaz Campbell and Oban Pidgeon.

In the 8-10 experts Michael Ledlie won, with James Handleigh second and Fred Deveraux third, while in the equivalent novice race third place went to Ryan Cameron with Zak Foreman second and Anthony Perrott first.

The 11-13 experts saw Anthony Taylor first home, ahead of Ben Gutteridge and Mason James, while in the 11-plus novices, Bradley Vine took third with Tom Clarke second and Darren Plumb first.

The last class was the 14-plus experts where Lee Alexander took gold, ahead of Danny Bateman and Miles Kirby.

The club's summer practice night's are held every Tuesday at the club's track with the gates now opening at 6pm - an hour earlier than originally planned so that additional coaching can be provided.
