ROYSTON Rockets BMX Racing Club made the final trip of the winter season last Sunday to compete in the sixth round of the East Anglian Winter Series, in Ipswich. Although the weather was cold, the wind dropped to give the riders a good track to race on, which made a pleasant change from previous rounds. More than 60 riders from around the region took part and the format of the day's event made for some very competitive racing with all riders having at least five chances of showing their racing skills. The youngest class is seven years and under and is known as Formula 5, and Royston's three riders in the class all made the final, with Aaron Dalleywater finishing second and Bradan Blanche taking fourth spot. In Formula 4, for 8-10-year-olds, the Rockets riders had more "A" final success with Kyle Gutteridge in third and the youngest rider in the class, Ethan Lewis, took fifth in the B final with team-mate Aston Blanche in eighth place. All three Rockets made the A final of Formula 3 (11-13 years) with James Handleigh taking second, Ben Gutteridge fourth and Louis Burton sixth. Both Royston riders in the Formula 2 class made the "A" final, where Wayne Gutteridge fell going into the first turn while challenging for a top-three placing while Anthony Taylor, who had qualified to ride up a class, managed to keep clear of the early race incidents to take fourth. The last class on the track was Formula 1 where again all three Rockets made the A final, with Richard Townsend taking third and Jonathan Roberts in seventh just ahead of team-mate Lee Alexander in eighth. The next event is the East Anglia Spring Classic, at Norwich, on April 9, where the Rockets will be out in force for the summer season's opening event.
