ONCE again a play-off will be required at Royston Golf Club to decide the winner of the Men’s Medal Winners Final.

Twenty seven players took part in Sunday’s event and it was Ben Bennett and John Ellis who tied, shooting two under par 68s. Ellis was firmly in control of the title but slipped to a double bogey finish to allow Bennett to finish alongside him. Three-handicapper Pete Rutter finished in third with a nett 70.

Martin Shipley won the single stableford alongside the Medal Winners with an amazing 41 points, including a birdie two at the short sixth.

Simon Clark returned to form to finish in second with 39, closely followed by Dave Rowell and Graham Cartwright.

The ladies played two medals last week and former captain, Mary Mitchell, won on Thursday, while Tracey Parsons won on Saturday.

The Club also held its last Charity Stableford of the year recently and the Battle of Britain trophy was won by David Caunce with 40 points. Craig Holson, who is more famous for his trousers than his golf, was runner-up while Sandra Williams took the ladies prize.

The club plays host to Cambridge University Golf Club this Sunday in the oldest fixture for both clubs which dates back to 1892. The university will be looking for their first victory in over a decade, but a strong Royston side will make their task extremely difficult.

In other results, Tom Trimble won the Men’s medal with a net 64 ahead of Keith Cridland (67) and Adrian Shoebridge (68).

Graham Clark won the Midweek Golfers Stableford with 35 points ahead of Mike Harrison (34), Stuart Knight (32) and Jim Hopkins (32).

Paul Thomson won the Saturday Stableford with 41 points ahead of Charlie Fidler (39) and James Hayden (38).
