ORGANISERS of Royston Sports Fayre hope that the event will encourage people in Royston to get involved in the towns many sporting clubs.

The fayre takes place on Saturday September 9 at Royston Leisure Centre and will feature demonstrations and activities run by local schools and sporting organisations.

Ken Charles, chairman of the Royston and District Sports Council, which has organised the fayre, said: "Encouraged by Sport England, we are keen to increase the level of participation in sports by adults over 18.

"We hope this event will raise awareness of the many opportunities on offer to adults and young people.

"A number of our clubs have five or six adult teams each weekend, with training and recreational activities midweek.

"Alongside these there is a comprehensive programme for young people, often from five or six years of age."

Visitors will be invited to try some of the sporting activities on show, including netball, badminton, and basketball. There will also be displays from Corvus Cornix Basketball Club, Royston Rugby Club, and Royston Hockey Club.

Mr Charles highlighted the success of the likes of teenage bowls star Matt Coppen as proof that there is a thriving sporting community in Royston.

He said: "Enormous efforts are devoted to furthering the development of our clubs and schools, both in managing and coaching.

"We are always seeking to provide high-quality training and preparation for top class competition.

"We are very proud that we have an under-23 bowls champion, an England basketballer, a very promising young female pole-vaulter, and a talented gymnast in our community.

"Credit must be given to the motivation and training at schools."

Royston Sports Fayre will run from 10am-5pm.
