Ashwell Vets 1 Royston Town Vets 3 FIVE changes to the previous week's team saw Royston hit three second-half goals to come from behind to win at Meldreth on Sunday. Brian Cannon, Paul Lewis, Daryl Quinn and Nick Humphries all returned to the fold, along with back-from-holiday Kevin Barthrop in a first half that amazingly finished goalless. Fired on from midfield by Richard Harris and Barthrop, Town had by far the majority of play, yet just could not get the ball in the back of the net, against some sound and resolute Ashwell defending. At the other end, Ashwell always looked dangerous on the break, yet even when presented with opportunities by the home defence, and Mike Jackson in particular, they equally struggled to find the target. Town introduced Ian King and Ian Stubbs at half-time, as the second half continued in a similar vein, with Ashwell continuing to play the lone striker and getting everyone else behind the ball to frustrate the visitors. Harris hit the bar with a powerful header before Ashwell gained a free kick on the edge of the Royston penalty area following a quick breakaway. From the kick Leete curled a shot around the Royston wall into the far corner to put the home side ahead. Town drew level minutes later when Simon Lewis fired home, having been put through by his brother Paul. Royston took the lead 10 minutes later, when after another period of heavy pressure, Lewis got his second, nodding home a Humphries corner from close range. Stubbs deservedly got on the scoresheet to make it 3-1, heading home another Royston corner nine minutes from time. The home side continued to battle away in a game played in a fine sporting manner, yet Town came away knowing that they are still not firing on all cylinders and creating the number of real chances in the final third that they should be. Knebworth Vets are scheduled to visit Garden Walk this Sunday, although concerns over the home playing surface may mean an alternative venue is required. Royston Town Vets: M Chaffey, M Jackson, I Allen, B Cannon, K Flack, R Harris, D Quinn, K Barhrop, S Lewis, P Lewis, N Humphries, I Stubbs, I King.
