Saturday’s poor weather did not prevent a six wicket Bassingbourn victory over Abington 3rds in Division Junior 3 South.

Both sides were keen to play and endured constant drizzle as a full game was played out. Abington’s batsmen went hard from ball one as opening bowlers Max Ayliffe and Jaun De Beer struggled to find their length. Wickets soon fell with Jaun De Beer taking two caught and bowleds on his way to 5 for 34. Ayliffe claimed a deserved wicket as Abington stumbled to 67 for 7. Some late order hitting got the total 129 with Tom Andrews and Ben Allen taking two wickets each.

Captain Adrian Wilson helped Bassingbourn chase down a bigger total last week and he again looked assured but he was one of four batsmen out as Bassingbourn fell to 41 for 4. Former opening partnership Matthew Andrews and Neil Smith were at the crease and their skill and experience helped put the chase back on track. Things took another turn when Andrews pulled his hamstring but Allen came out to run for him and the pair remained unbeaten, Andrews on 37* and Smith 41*, as Bassingbourn ran out comfortable winners by 6 wickets with 10 overs to spare.

Team: Wilson (Capt), Bartlett, Bates, M Andrews, Allen, N Smith, J Robinson, J De Beer, T Andrews, M Smith, M Ayliffe.
