BASSINGBOURN need just three points from their final Cambridge and District Bowls League Division One game to seal the title after victory at West Wratting.

Ken Cleaver, bowling at lead on rink one, did not have the best of nights but even so Bassingbourn had only lost two shots after 10 ends.

When Bassingbourn picked up a four on end 10, the game was effectively won and it was then a case of picking up as many shots as possible.

West Wratting managed a small comeback but could not stop Bass' winning 18-11.

On rink two, Don Laing and Ron Ingrey were not at their best and skip Graham Parrish struggled to stay in contact with Wratting.

When Bassingbourn picked up four shots on ends 12 and 17, the win suddenly looked a possibility, but Wratting managed to win the last end which made the final score 16-13 in the hosts' favour.

Anne Brown led well on rink three. Toni Infanti also had a reasonable night but on a rink that was extremely difficult to read.

Wratting out-bowled Bassingbourn early on. Ian Stewart was not having much success at skip and Bassingbourn were playing catch-up all night.

Bassingbourn picked up a four at end 15, giving them the lead for the first time 17-14, but the hosts fought back to snatch a 17-17 draw.

On rink four, Joe Cipullo had a good night bowling at lead while Sid Manning was drawing and converting as required at two.

Bill Manley had an excellent night at skip. This trio put a string of recent narrow defeats behind them and were convincing winners 18-8.

The result gave Bassingbourn 5.5 points, leaving them within touching distance of the title. They face Chesterton in their final game.
