ANOTHER wet weekend has left Buntingford Town manager Paul Attfield worried about his side's Herts County League title chances being ruined by the weather.

Town still have half of their 30-game league programme to complete, as well as being involved in two cup competitions, and only 11 weeks to get the games played.

"I am concerned about a fixture backlog" admitted Attfield. "We're in the middle of February and we still have 15 league and at least three cup games to play. A lot more of our youth players are playing for the first team this season, and if we take them out of youth games to play for the senior sides, we risk not being able to fulfil those games.

"The youth side are still in three cup competitions, and have only played a third of their midweek fixtures.

"We could end up playing five games per week between the first and youth sides."

Another complication for Attfield is that his club stand to lose the use of both venues they play and train during midweeks.

Norton Road in Baldock is now closed until the summer as it is being redeveloped, with an artificial pitch being laid and new dressing rooms built.

And the County Ground at Letchworth starts to stage a series of cup finals in March, leaving Town with little opportunity to play there.

"We've been told that we have to play all our games at Letchworth by the middle of March, which is a bit annoying as we weren't told about until recently" said Attfield.

Despite the problems, the Town boss remains positive that his side can challenge for league honours:

"We've got a big enough squad as long as we don't get injuries. a lot of other teams have nearly as many games as we do. We can't afford to lose any more weeks to weather. It's going to be mayhem, but fortunately I have two good fixtures secretaries who will try to sort things out."

Town will be hoping to get back to action on Saturday when they are scheduled to travel to Hinton, while on Tuesday they make the short trip to Wormely Rovers to face a side they have already scored 16 goals against in three outings this season.
