TOWN travelled to Shenley for their fourth league outing on Saturday and bounced back from their disappointing draw against Knebworth in midweek to record another fine victory.

In tricky weather conditions, with a swirling gusty wind throughout the game, the visitors played some fluent football throughout, created plenty of chances, and never looked in any real danger that they were going to leave with anything but maximum points.

The visiting side let their intentions be known in the first minute when Conor De Lacy threaded a fine through ball for Jan Stephens, whose 12-yard strike was blocked by the on-rushing keeper.

Five minutes later Stephens cushioned a sweet pass for Gary Christie.

His first-time shot was blocked by the trailing boot of the home keeper once more, and just moments later Luke Robins' fine run and cross was met by Christie's head but the ball went the wrong side of the right post.

Star were content to let Town have plenty of ball and tried hitting their visitors on the break with two pacey forwards but the concentration levels at the back were effective enough to thwart any dangerous advances and the hosts were reduced mainly to long-range efforts which never really tested Damion Williamson.

Town's best effort of the first half fell to forward De Lacy who after a neat bit of skill cannoned a 20-yard shot against the frame of the crossbar on 28 minutes.

Williamson had one save to make just before the break when he was alert enough to tip over a 16-yard lob after Town's only peace of hesitant defending during the entire game.

Town would have been disappointed to go in level at the break but they returned with real conviction for the second half, controlled the tempo and the play throughout and took the deserved lead in the 49th minute.

A neat bit of quick football in the box saw De Lacy and Stephens link up with the later cushioning a deft pass for the unmarked Christie to strike past the keeper from 10 yards.

The lead was doubled eight minutes later when Jan Stephens cut in from the right touchline and drilled an unstoppable 20-yarder into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

Not content on the cushion gained Town pushed for more goals and were unfortunate not to extend their lead further.

The unfortunate De Lacy hit the woodwork on two occasions, both from headers, Will Turl had an excellent header tipped over and Matt Turl an effort cleared off the line as the barrage continued, and with Star beginning to tire, the game was all over as a contest long before the final whistle.

Manager Paul Attfield said: "The players were genuinely disappointed with their showing on Wednesday night, and were intent on putting things right in this game which was very evident throughout.

"Very much like our opening three games we controlled the play pretty much, and although the weather conditions didn't help either team, I was pleased with the collective attitude shown, and most of the football we produced."
