Evergreen 0 Buntingford Town 2 TOWN gained an eighth consecutive league victory against bottom-of-the-table Evergreen. Despite a vicious swirling wind which seemed destined to spoil the game, Town played some good football throughout and two Gary Christie strikes midway through the second half gave the visitors another deserved three points, on Saturday. The visitors started the game well, passing the ball around on a fine surface, so countering the threat of the strong wind, and created some good chances throughout the half. Both George Garner and Carl Smith had good efforts saved well by the home keeper in the early stages and, after 22 minutes, Garner put the ball into the net from a Christie pass but was pulled back for an offside decision. Tom Wisson saw a fine 20-yard shot fly just over after another flowing team move and after 33 minutes a cross-cum-shot from Garner was tipped over by the keeper with help from the top of the crossbar. Christie had a good chance moments later when Carl Smith threaded a ball for his well-timed run but his angled shot went agonisingly wide of the far post with the keeper advancing. Evergreen struggled with the intensity shown by the Town team and never threatened Damion Williamson in goal or Town's well organised defensive unit. The only disappointment of the first half for Town was that it remained goalless but they continued where they left off after the break. An early cross from Garner was met by Christie's header but with the goal gaping his header lacked direction and went well wide. Tom Bellingham then played a through ball for the pacey Carl Smith to collect but a defender surprisingly recovered and, with Smith hesitating, the prolific striker was easily tackled before the expected finish. The opening goal came after 62 minutes when a simple move down the right was finished when Garner crossed for Christie to volley home from eight yards. Four minutes later, the lead was doubled when another Garner cross was only half headed clear by the centre half and Christie sent a 20-yard volley into the top right-hand corner. With the game seemingly won, Town dropped their intense game to a slower, keep-ball exercise. Evergreen had a couple of chances late on when a free-kick smashed off the top of the crossbar and Williamson comfortably tipped over a long-range wind-assisted lob but Town never looked likely to give up their lead. Town: D Williamson, B Lynch, D Chaffey (R Wilmott), L Ridings, J Babbage, T Bellingham, M Smith, G Garner, C Smith (J Bitting), G Christie, Tom Wisson.
