TWELVE players from Melbourn Judo Club entered the British Judo Association - Eastern Area (Closed) Mini-Mons last weekend at the University of East Anglia Sportspark, in Norwich. Nine were complete novices who, along with three members who had taken part in only one event outside of the club, exceeded all expectations. The squad came home with a gold medal won by Matthew Bevan, and three silvers won by Tom Brooker, Tom Mason and Tom Parry. Third-place bronze medals were won by Tom Charlwood, Rajiv Latchman, James Long, Jade Bevan and Luke Bateman, with fourth place bronze medals going to Erin Bateman, Jack Hyland and Ashley Wilkins. The nine newcomers to the club joined in November and were part of a beginners' group that joined with 12 other. Since moving to the Royston Leisure Centre membership has risen to almost 80. The club are not able to take in any more junior newcomers until April. Club members Alex Springall, James Nisbet, Sam Cottam, Edward Parry, Megan and Kim-Michael Sorensen and David Unger attended the Excel International in London. All fought well but failed to gain medals.
