DROPPING both openers cost Great Chishill dear on Saturday as they saw visitors Great Shelford rack up a huge 290-6 at tea.
Thomas and Barnard went on to add 187 for the first wicket after 31 overs and take the game away from their hosts. Young leg-spinner Tom Picton-Turbervill came out with his head held high, though, returning figures of 3-42.
Chishill's reply was built around opening bat Paul Drury's 46, but even a late flourish from Guy Musson (68no) was not enough to prevent a heavy defeat, although a score of 230 at least restored some respectability.
GREAT Chishill's seconds took on Barrington seconds, the unbeaten leaders of Junior 4C, and came out on top by 40 runs.
Put in, the visitors looked to be in trouble at 48-4 but Ed Handon's 34 pushed the total up to122 after the allotted overs and Chishill looked to be in with a fighting chance.
Barrington had reckoned without the skills of opening bowler Steve Gardner, however, and he produced the astonishing figures of 10-8-4-2, the first seven overs all maidens, to leave the home side struggling.
Backed up by some sharp fielding, Jason Coombs then tore away the middle order with 5-12 to dismiss Barrington for just 82, wrecking their perfect start to the season in the process.
