Under-12s Division Three

BASSINGBOURN'S hot and cold season was blowing hot on Sunday afternoon as they beat Stevenage Town for the second time in this campaign.

On a sloping pitch 'bourn re-discovered their passing game which was missing from last week's bad defeat at Hitchin and took control from the start.

With Callum Waller moving in from the wing into midfield and Evan Goldman filling in at the back as well as taking the captain's armband, 'bourn created a string of early chances and were denied a penalty when it looked like Waller had been fouled in the box.

However they were soon deservedly ahead when Luke Barrett found himself unmarked in the box and had plenty of time to fire home.

Jacob Stekly nearly finished off a fine run but was blocked as he shot and Ben Blower was unlucky to slip as the ball came to him on the edge of the six yard box and he was unable to get a shot in.

With the defensive trio of Barrett, Evan Goldman and Harry Vines coping well with the pace of the Stevenage forwards, it was Waller who increased the lead when, like the first goal, he had plenty of time in the box to pick his spot and score.

Just before half-time 'bourn were caught by a Stevenage counterattack and were unable to stop them getting a goal back.

Playing up the slope in the second half 'bourn looked in control as Stevenage started to rely on the long ball over the top.

Nathan Beynon put in another impressive performance in midfield along with Nick Partridge and Callum Irons to prevent any passing game Stevenage had but it was a long ball down the middle that caught 'bourn napping and allowed the Stevenage forward to pinch the ball from 'keeper Becan Davies to equalise.

Instead of playing deep and settling for a draw Bassingbourn continued to attack with Stekly on the right and substitute Edward Kelly on left getting the ball into the Stevenage penalty area.

It was one of these crosses that eventually found Waller whose shot took a slight deflection into the corner of the net to restore Bassingbourn's lead.

With the referee playing lots of added time 'bourn continued to press but were unable to increase the lead before the final whistle.
