GRENEWAY Year 7 pupils Gus Rees and Justin Leavers have been selected from the best athletes in Hertfordshire to represent their county at under-13 level in the Inter-Counties Championships at Kingston-upon-Thames in July.

Both are multi-gold medal winners from the North Herts Schools’ Championships – Gus won the javelin and 1500 metre race while Justin took gold in the 200m and long jump.

Both athletes then achieved top two finishes in the County Championships to earn their county call-ups and the awarding of the very distinctive Hertfordshire colours. The county vests were presented at a special ceremony in Hemel Hempstead and both athletes were honoured to have achieved this feat.

Gus will throw the javelin, hoping to improve on his PB of 33.10m and Justin will compete in the Herts orange in the 200m, 4 x 100m and Long jump, looking to improve his PBs of 26.97 and 4.65m for the individual events.

Head teacher Terry Graves says the two athletes deserve their call-up.

He said: “This a wonderful achievement and a great opportunity for Gus and Justin who have the chance to compete against the very best in their age group and experience the next tier of elite performance. They deserve this accolade for all their hard work, dedication and commitment throughout a tough but very successful season. They are a pleasure to work with.”
