Fowlmere 1 Melbourn 5

MELBOURN finally got the win their recent form has deserved on a very blustery day in Fowlmere.

Fifteen minutes in and Melbourn took a richly deserved lead. Andrew Morris carved his way into the box and as his cross shot was parried by the ‘keeper to the on-rushing Carl Chadwick who rammed a finish home at the expense of getting injured by the desperate centre-back.

Melbourn continued to play well and with Andrew Gray proving to be a rock at the heart of Melbourn’s defence, Melbourn were able to press. Morris continued to cause the opponents no end of trouble and eventually got a goal in freakish fashion somehow curling a corner in at the near-post despite playing into the wind.

Minutes later and Morris stormed through to be scythed down in the box for a penalty. The defender was perhaps fortunate to not get a card of any colour, being the last man, but Andrew Gray stepped up to smash home Melbourn’s third.

The second half began with both teams struggling to adapt their games with and against the wind. Much of the half was played at the Fowlmere end and with Andrew Gray’s long throws assisted by a strong wind behind it was a case of Fowlmere being bombarded. Indeed Melbourn’s fourth goal came from one such throw that Gray launched from the halfway line. As Kris Watters challenged the defender on the edge of the box the defender got enough of a touch to ensure that Gray’s throw into the back of the net would count.

What was to be witnessed next however was an amazing strike from Kris Watters. Sometimes criticised for missing what seem to be easy efforts from six yards, Watters scored a goal of a lifetime. Following a long clearance Watters controlled on his chest and turned just inside the Fowlmere half. He then unleashed a stunning volley on the bounce which soared into the top corner. This was no fluke and was deserved by the target man who had lead the line admirably all game.

Melbourn saw the game home and the only tarnishing was a Fowlmere penalty at the beginning of the second half.
