Melbourn Judoka triumphs at BJA National Championships in Nottingham
MELBOURN-based judoka Imogen Ranner was crowned national champion at the British Judo Association National Championships in Nottingham on Sunday.
The 11-year-old, who trains three times a week at Melbourn Judo Club and is one of the brightest young talents in the east of England, triumphed in the U44kg category to take first prize after topping a group of five girls in a round-robin format.
Sam McCracken, 11, also of Melbourn Judo Club, competed against 26 other boys in the U34kg and performed magnificently to finish in fifth place overall after falling just short in the semi-final and missing out on a bronze medal. It was a great achievement for McCracken who was up against tough competition throughout.
On the same day, Tom Fox, nine, and Jacob Hansen, 10, both took part in the Eastern Area red belt rumble. Fox had an outstanding day winning gold with some excellent foot sweeps. Hansen also performed well, winning his bronze medal fight with a powerful Ippon throw. This is where these boys can gain valuable experience so that they too can enter national events in future years.
Meanwhile, Emma Reid, 16, took part in the area training session and grading, winning all her fights and 40 points towards her black belt. She will be competing in the Junior Nationals (12-20-year-olds) in Sheffield this weekend.
